What happens to my stuff?
We at Space by Space are in no way minimalists. If you use all your spatulas, keep them! If you have 10 pie pans that you once every year at the holidays, keep them! Let’s just put them in your holiday bin and not take up every day storage space. But when your abundant collection of pie tins haven’t been used in years, or are getting in the way of what you use regularly, then it’s a good time to let them go.
The nice part about our process is that we want you to go through items one by one and say yes or no to each. This is an ideal opportunity to reconnect with your treasures possessions and re-work your space in a way that will maximize efficiency and encourage using what you own.
So what happens to all that stuff?
First, we will make a space to put anything that goes to friends and family. We bring bags for this purpose and write the name of which person or organization it needs to go to. Ideally, we load these in your car to help encourage the process.
For stuff that has no immediate next home, we put that aside to go away. Many organizers will bring this pile straight to Goodwill. A great organization, but only one of the many places that can benefit from unused or no longer needed goods.
At Space by Space, we give you two options.
- We will load your unwanted items to your car, garage, or space in the house to be dealt with later. (If you want to do an itemized donation for a tax write-off, choose this option.)
- We take care of it for you - If it comes with us, you agree that it becomes our property when it leaves your home.
While we would love to offer consignment support, we do not have the capacity to assist in the process for shared profit. However, we hope this list serves as an extensive resource for how to make the most value out of unwanted items and prevent waste.

After going through and organizing your belongings, you may come across items that no longer serve a purpose in your life but could still be valuable to others. Instead of discarding these items, consider rehoming them to friends and family members. This not only helps to reduce waste but also allows cherished items to find a new home where they can be appreciated and used. Sharing your gently used belongings can strengthen your relationships, as your loved ones may be thrilled to receive something they need or desire. Moreover, this practice fosters a sense of community and generosity, creating a positive ripple effect as you declutter your space and contribute to the well-being of those around you.

After going through and organizing your belongings, you may encounter items that can't be rehomed to friends or family members, nor are they suitable for donation. These items, which might be broken, outdated, or no longer usable, need to be responsibly disposed of. It's important to consider environmentally friendly disposal methods, such as recycling or using designated disposal services for hazardous materials. By taking the time to properly discard these items, you help to reduce landfill waste and minimize environmental impact.
